FREETOWN COLLECTIVE
Dec 2024
On-location portraits of Freetown Collective: Muhammad Muwakil, Lou Lyons, DJ Rawkus (Jayron Remy), Tishanna Williams, Shanna Joseph, and Malene Joseph, shot at Mille Fleurs, the 1904 French Provincial mansion on Queen's Park Savannah, one of Port of Spain's Magnificent Seven. Founded in 2010 and named after the historic Freetown area of Trinidad (now Belmont), where those who reached it were considered free before emancipation, the band carries that legacy through music fusing calypso with poetry, philosophy, and social commentary.
There's something deliberate about placing this collective, named for a settlement of the formerly enslaved, inside a restored colonial mansion. These images sit in that tension.
