ROBERT YOUNG

Studio portraits of Robert Young, founder and creative director of The Cloth, the Caribbean luxury fashion house rooted in Belmont, Trinidad since 1986. Self-taught "under meh mudder house bottom," Young describes himself not as a fashion designer but as an artist working with clothing. His appliqué compositions and sculptural silhouettes draw on Carnival, African heritage, and spiritual traditions. The Cloth's work has been exhibited at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, the Museum at FIT in New York, and Savvy Contemporary in Berlin.
