THE CLOTH
Feb 2020 - 2024
The rarest cotton on Earth grows on three Caribbean islands. Of 110 million bales produced globally each year, just 130 are West Indian Sea Island, protected bloom by bloom with hand-tied muslin bags against cross-pollination.
Robert Young transforms this scarcity into purpose at The Cloth's Belmont atelier. Founded in 1986, the brand's signature emerged from crisis: when his silk-screen printer walked out, Young hand-stitched coloured patches into compositional narratives, limitation becoming methodology. In 2017, he partnered with British anthropologist Sophie Bufton to form The Cloth Caribbean, positioning the label internationally. The Cloth has since shown at TRANOÏ Paris and Tokyo, and pieces were featured in a Smithsonian exhibition at the National Museum of African Art.
These sessions (2021–2024) traverse studio precision to street vernacular. More than luxury fashion: this is Caribbean excellence built from the world's rarest cotton, stitch by stitch.
